GORDON - Rhodia Parrott Shinholster of College Street died Saturday. She was an 80-year-old retired Freeport Kaolin Co. worker.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Church of God in Christ in Gordon. Burial will be in Middle Georgia Memory Gardens in Macon.

A Wilkinson County native, Mrs. Shilholster worked for the company of 25 years. She was also a member of the Church of God in Christ, where she was the mother of the church.

Survivors include her husband, Reper Shinholstter of Gordon; a son, Morris Shinholster of Chicato; three sisters, Irone Browne, Katherine Parrott and Kate Parrott, all of Buffalo, N.Y; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-greatgrandchilren and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will greet friends at Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church in Macon from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

The epitome of remarkable grace and courage, Verline Parrott Copenny passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday evening May 3, 2023.

She was born on May 30, 1927, in Laurens County, Georgia to George and Rebecca Parrott, who preceded her in death. She grew up with seven sisters and brothers, including a surviving brother, Elven Parrott and sister, Lois Parrott Canty.

When she was just a baby, her mother declared that she would become a teacher. In 1944, she headed to Savannah State College where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. It was at Savannah State that she would meet and marry her husband of 63 years, Edward L. Copenny. There they were not only partners in life; they were partners in education, both starting their careers in the same community where she was born. For more than forty years, she touched the lives of hundreds of students inspiring them to "reach for the stars" while continuing her pursuit of excellence, earning a Master of Science degree in guidance and counseling from Fort Valley State College.

However, more important to her than being an educator, was being a mom. She is survived by four children, Rhonda Copenny Mitchell, Dr. Patti Copenny Reed (Larry), Bernard Copenny (Doris) and Peggy Copenny Russell (Joseph). Everyone knew she did not play when it came to her children. She often said, "If you want to get on my bad side, just mess with my children." Later came grandchildren, Raquel, Colbert, Tanika, Torian (Natasha), Patrick (Angela), Joi (Raphael), Dav'El (Lindsey) and Alexander. Eventually, thirteen great grandchildren would also be blessed to know, love and learn from "Granny". She also touched the lives of her nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, students, colleagues, and friends.

Mrs. Copenny, a servant leader, was diligently committed to her church and community in many administrative and leadership roles. She served as Commissioner to the General Assembly for the Savannah Presbytery, Moderator of Savannah Presbytery, as well as Moderator of Augusta-Macon Presbyterian Women. She received two Honorary Life Memberships, reserved only for Presbyterian women who demonstrate outstanding service on behalf of Presbyterian Women USA. Other leadership roles included serving as Guidance Counselor for the Laurens County Board of Education, Vice President of Student Services at the Heart of Georgia Technical College, President of the Board of Commissioners of Dublin Housing Authority, and Executive Director and Chairman of the Board for Women in Need of God's Shelter (WINGS). She also served as Ruling Elder and Clerk of Session at Washington Street Presbyterian Church. Though repeatedly recognized for her accomplishments, the pinnacle of that recognition came when The Verline P. Copenny Center was named and dedicated, in her honor, to serve her community.

For all of her nearly 96 years on earth, she served God first. And if you ever talked to her, she would say, "God has smiled on me" then she would begin to sing, "God has smiled on me, He has set me free God has smiled on me, He's been good to me."
